May 2017 Blog

Wow, it doesn’t seem possible that just 30 days ago, we had our final blast of snowfall – Mother Nature’s way of reminding us that winter’s not over until she says it is. And now, it’s already May. The tulips are out in force, lawns are being spruced up for summer, and people are antsy to be outdoors.

One of the things I love most about being a Realtor in our community is introducing newcomers to the long list of amazing and wonderful events and activities happening throughout the year in and around Saratoga.

There is, quite literally, something for everyone. While it’s impossible to list everything in this short post, here’s a sprinkling of some of the activities and events happening in and around Saratoga Springs this month.

The 57th Annual Saratoga Springs Horse Show kicked off, May 3rd, and continues through the 21st. There is nothing quite like getting off the Adirondack Northway at Exit 14 and traveling down Union Avenue for the first time, watching as horses and their riders saunter back and forth between the stables and the show ring, surrounded by Saratoga’s rich equine history. No matter how many years I’ve lived here, I never tire of that scene.

As the days become longer and warmer, our thoughts turn to the water. Over on Stafford’s Bridge Road this Saturday and Sunday, May 6th and 7th, is the 2017 Paddlefest. Kayakers, canoe fans and rowers will flock to “Fish Creek” for a weekend of testing boats and savoring the outdoor experience.

While you’re paddling around the lake, take a look at some of the beautiful homes overlooking the water. Many newcomers to Saratoga Springs don’t realize that they can have the best of so many worlds living here. Not only do we have a vibrant downtown, full of arts, culture, great dining and entertainment; we also have beautiful waterfronts, creeks and streams for fishing, frolicking and just enjoying being out in Nature.

On May 13th and 14th, the 2017 Albany Tulip Fest is happening in Washington Park, just a 30-inutes drive. Whether you’re a newcomer to the area or you’ve lived here your whole life, the festival is something everyone should experience at least once.

If perennials aren’t your thing, maybe classic cars are! May is the month that auto enthusiasts flock to the annual Spring Auto Show at the Saratoga Automobile Museum at from vintage to “muscle.” Whether you drive a Ferrari or a family van, the auto show is a fun way to spend a day in the Spa State Park with family and friends.

If craft beer is your bailiwick, May 20th is the day to wet your whistle at the Saratoga Brewfest. Sample some of the best craft beers from around the region, as you stroll the grounds of the historic Saratoga racecourse.

And of course, you can’t talk about things to do in Saratoga if you don’t mention the food! Hattie’s is one of our most iconic culinary landmarks, and they’re wrapping up the month of May with their annual Crawfish Festival on Monday evening, May 29th from 6pm til 9pm. There’s sure to be plenty of great food, music and just a general amount of good ole southern fried fun!

Of course, we haven’t even scratched the surface of all the things to do and see in and around Saratoga.
